Highlights from SPJ/LA’s Regional Conference: A Tip Sheet on Virtual and Augmented Reality

USC journalism Professor Robert Hernandez.

SPJ/LA hosted the regional conference for SPJ’s Region 11 chapters last weekend at the Universal City Hilton.

We had a weekend full of speakers including former Associated Press reporter Linda Deutsch, USC journalism Professor Robert Hernandez, Stephen Galloway, executive features editor at The Hollywood Reporter and Harriet Ryan, an investigative reporter at the Los Angeles Times.

We also held nine panels on covering immigration, freelancing, data reporting, covering sexual harassment allegations, reporting on disasters, writing, reporting on homelessness, investigative reporting for broadcast and covering the LGBTQ+ community.

This week we’ll be posting highlights from the conference.

First up is a tip sheet from Hernandez, who kicked off the conference on Saturday morning and spoke about the future of journalism. He encouraged the student and professional journalists in the audience to embrace new technologies in augmented reality, virtual reality and 360-degree video now rather than wait until they are fully incorporated into everyday life.

Here is the link to the tip sheet.
