Sources: Who Can We Really Trust?
Sources. Who are they? We, as journalists, need to know, but sometimes those sources don't want to be known. Is this a risky practice?Who is that source really being loyal to? How do we know the answers to these questions?
The Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists invites you to attend a panel discussion on the ethical dilemmas in identifying trustworthy sources and knowing when to run with anonymously-sourced information.
NBC4 Southern California's managing editor, Matt Goldberg, will moderate the panel, featuring: Elizabeth Aguilera, Senior Health Care Reporter for KPCC; Andrew Blankstein, reporter for NBC News Investigations; Kim Bui, journalist for Reported.ly; and Justin Pritchard, reporter for the Associated Press.
The event will be held at: NBC4 Southern California in Universal City.
We hope to answer the 5 Ws (and H) of Anonymous Sources:
Who: Who is the source?
What: What is the risk of using it? What if they're wrong? What is it worth?
Where: Where are they getting the info? Where is their loyalty?
When: When do we need anonymous sources?
Why: Why do we trust them?
How: How will it affect us? How will it affect them?
