The deadline to nominate a Southern California journalist for SPJ/LA’s 2020 Distinguished Journalists Awards has been extended to Feb. 19.

The Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is seeking nominees in five media categories: print publications with circulation of 90,000 or more; print publications with less than 90,000 circulation; television broadcast; radio broadcast; and digital media.

Nominees may include reporters, photographers, news anchors, behind-the-scenes writers, editors and producers, among others. Awards recognize a body of work rather than an individual story.

The SPJ/LA’s annual awards honor those who seek out the facts, tell the important stories and make sure the public has access to critical information. In these unprecedented times, with the free press facing challenges on multiple fronts, it’s more important than ever to recognize that work.

SPJ/LA is also seeking nominations for the Freedom of Information award, which honors a non-journalist who has helped promote First Amendment issues. Previous winners have worked in the legal profession, academia, government and nonprofit organizations.

SPJ/LA has been honoring journalists and FOI champions since 1976.

The 2020 nomination form can be found here and must be submitted by Feb. 19. All submissions must be in English or include English translations.

Please do not nominate past honorees. A list of prior winners can be found here.

Awards will be presented at SPJ/LA's annual awards ceremony. Our video of last year's virtual Distinguished Journalists Awards Ceremony can be found here.
