The latest news from SPJ/LA…

Congratulations to our Distinguished Journalist Award honorees!

Thank you to everyone who attended SPJ/LA’s 48th Annual Distinguished Journalist Awards banquet. It was a special and memorable night as we honored and celebrated the outstanding careers of seven local journalists, a journalism educator and two student journalists.

Congratulations to all our honorees: Salvador Duran, Louis Sahagun, H. Susan Henderson, Adriana Chavira, Toni Sciacqua, Ashley Alvarado, Margaret Carrero, Cebelihle Hlatshwayo, Francine Orr, and Anne To.

Thank you to CBS News 60 Minutes correspondent Bill Whitaker for delivering a powerful speech and sharing the story of your career and how you started in the industry.

We also want to give a special thank you to everyone on SPJ/LA’s Board of Directors who worked so hard to put this event together.

SPJ/LA would like to thank the generous sponsors who stepped up to support the banquet: Southern California News Group, LAist, Paramount, and The LA Times.

These sponsorships make it possible for SPJ/LA to host this special gathering. It also supports our six annual student scholarships and our work in supporting local journalism, which includes advocating for press freedoms, and our professional development workshops and events.

Scholarships

"Getting the SPJ/LA scholarship meant a lot to me, financially and mentally. Financially because, $1,500 relieves so much pressure when you're broke and working two jobs to get through college. Mentally, it allowed me to think if I'm good enough for a scholarship from a prestigious press organization, that I'm good enough to be in a newsroom someday."

- Angel Carreras, 2016 recipient of the Bill Farr Memorial Scholarship. He is on a fellowship with KCRW-FM.
