Journalism coalition release statement opposing AB 2153

SPJ/LA and several other organizations have co-signed a letter opposing Assembly Bill 2153. The bill authored by Assm. Josh Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) would weaken the California Public Records Act.

“We, the undersigned organizations, respectfully oppose Assembly Bill 2153. AB 2153 would require a public agency to notify an employee of a public records request pertaining to them or their work “promptly and prior to the release of records” to the requester. Because public records usually pertain to or at least mention a public employee, this requirement would apply to virtually all records requests. This bill undermines the public’s right of access to information about the public’s business and thus represents a direct affront to the California Public Records Act.”

Scholarships

"Getting the SPJ/LA scholarship meant a lot to me, financially and mentally. Financially because, $1,500 relieves so much pressure when you're broke and working two jobs to get through college. Mentally, it allowed me to think if I'm good enough for a scholarship from a prestigious press organization, that I'm good enough to be in a newsroom someday."
