2024 Scholarship Recipients Announced

The Society of Professional Journalists Los Angeles Pro Chapter is pleased to announce its 2024 student scholarship awards.

Richard D. Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship of $2,000, to encourage diversity in newsrooms, is awarded to: Linsey Towles of Cal State Long Beach who is Managing Editor of the Daily Forty-Niner. She has published many stories in the Daily Forty-Niner and on KHTS Radio.

Nonprofit Communications and Media Network's Lisa A. Davidson Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 (supported by contributions to the Ruth Collander Endowment Fund) for a student who will be pursuing a career in journalism, is awarded to: Leila Alarcon at Cal State Long Beach who is the Editor-in-Chiefv of EÑYE (Formerly Dig eñ Español). She also writes for the Daily 49er with a goal of working at a bilingual or Spanish publication.

Ken Inouye Memorial Scholarship of $1,500, for a college journalist of color, is aimed at increasing ethnic diversity in newsrooms and is awarded to: Kristine Pascual from Cal Poly Pomona. She is the editor of the Bronco Guide, writes for The Poly Post, is president of SPJ’s Cal Poly Pomona student chapter and has interned at the Pasadena Weekly.

Carl Greenberg Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 for a college student pursuing investigative or political reporting is awarded to: Julia King of Loyola Marymount University who is the News Editor of The Los Angeles Loyolan. Her goal is to produce editorial content, either in news or politics.

Bill Farr Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 for high school seniors or college students who demonstrate a strong intent to pursue a career in journalism is awarded to: Sofiya Vasquez of North Hollywood High School. She is the deputy editor and social media manager of the NHHS online newspaper The Arcade. Her plan is to become an investigative journalist at the Daily Californian at UC Berkeley where she's been accepted to attend this Fall.
