Society of Professional Journalists Los Angeles Pro Chapter announces 2023 student scholarship awards

Richard D. Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship of $2,000, to encourage diversity in newsrooms, is awarded to: Shaanth Kodialam Nanguneri, a UCLA Communications major, who is Features and Student Life Editor at the Daily Bruin and has excellent published articles in the Orange County Register and Sacramento Bee.    

Nonprofit Communications and Media Network's Lisa A. Davidson Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 (supported by contributions to the Ruth Collander Endowment Fund) for a student who will be pursuing a career in journalism, is awarded to: Hien Nguyen who has excellent published work as Editor-in-Chief of the La Verne Magazine and as Arts Editor of the Campus Times at the University of La Verne, and who has been accepted to the USC Masters Specialized Journalism program. 

Ken Inouye Memorial Scholarship of $1,500, for a college journalist of color, is aimed at increasing ethnic diversity in newsrooms and is awarded to: Victoria Valenzuela, at the University of Southern California pursuing a master’s degree in Specialized Journalism with a concentration in social justice and investigations, who has written excellent social and criminal justice stories for Buzzfeed News, ScheerPost and L.A. Taco. 

Helen Johnson Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 for a college student pursuing broadcast journalism is awarded to: Brenda Elizondo at Cal State University - Fullerton, who is bilingual and produced a wide variety of interesting stories on campus and throughout Southern California, Arizona and Mexico. Brenda is also a Telemundo 52 Los Angeles News Intern.  

Carl Greenberg Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 for a college student pursuing investigative or political reporting is awarded to: Delilah Brumer at Daniel Pearl Magnet High school who has been accepted to Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism and has written excellent and a wide variety of stories published in the LA Times and Daily News as a paid Freelance Reporter.  

Bill Farr Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 for high school seniors or college students who demonstrate a strong intent to pursue a career in journalism is awarded to: Ava Paulsen of Castaic High School iCAN Academy who has been accepted Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism. Ava, during her freshman year of high school, founded the Daily Howl school newspaper and established the journalism program. Ava has written a variety of excellent stories.
